چکیده

Incubation of carboxyl-labeled fatty acids (RCi400H) with liver slices gave rise to Cl402 and labeled acetoacetic acid (1, 2). In the case of even numbered acids, much more of the radiocarbon appeared in the keto acid than was oxidized to C1402; however, the reverse situation occurred when acids of an odd number of carbons were used (2). Previously, studies made with non-labeled acids had yielded similar differences between Qo, and total acetoacetic acid production (3). The acetoacetic acid formed from carboxyl-labeled octanoic acid (1,4, 5) and hexanoic acid (4) has been shown to be asymmetrically labeled with respect to the carboxyl and carbonyl groups. That the acetoacetic acid formed by washed liver homogenates was the result of recondensation of 2-carbon fragments has been demonstrated (5, 6). In the latter reports, a mechanism was suggested to explain the asymmetry of the acetoacetic acid. In the present paper further studies on the metabolism of radioactive fatty acids by liver and kidney slices are presented in which the radiocarbon respired in the CO2 and present in the carbonyl and carboxyl groups of acetoacetic acid was determined The substrates used were carboxyllabeled pentanoic, hexanoic, heptanoic, octanoic, nonanoic, and dodecanoic acids, and (Yand p-labeled octanoic acids.

Biosynthesis of the cerebroside odd - numbered fatty acids

Rats were injected with radioactive acetate or propionate and, after four days, the saturated fatty acids were isolated from the brains and the brain cerebrosides. The amounts and specific activities of the individual normal and hydroxy acids were determined. In the rats given propionate, the odd-numbered acids (15:O to 25:O) had much higher specific activities. In the rats given acetate, the d...

Biological modification of the fatty acid group in an emulsan by supplementing fatty acids under conditions inhibiting fatty acid biosynthesis.

When the concentration of the antibiotic cerulenin was increased up to 3.0 mg/l in medium containing ethanol as a carbon source, the specific growth rate of Acinetobacter calcoaceticus and the fatty acid content of the emulsan decreased from 0.179 h(-1) and 13.9% to 0.015 h(-1) and 3.4%, respectively. The emulsifying activity in medium containing cerulenin decreased with increasing cerulenin co...

Incorporation of Specific Fatty Acid Precursors During Spore Germination and Outgrowth in Bacillus thuringiensis.

The selective incorporation of precursors specific for individual fatty acids in germinating and outgrowing spores of Bacillus thuringiensis is described. The specific precursors utilized were [C]butyrate, -isobutyrate, -valerate, and -isovalerate, which were incorporated into even-numbered normal-chain isomers, even-numbered iso-isomers, odd-numbered normal-chain acids, and odd-numbered isohom...

Cclvii . Studies in Fat Metabolism . Iii .

Tmis paper is concerned with measurements of the rates of acetoacetic acid formation from fatty acids in tissues other than liver. The oxidation of fatty acids in the liver has been dealt with in Parts I and II of this series [Jowett and Quastel, 1935, 1, 2]. The paper also describes the effect of sodium malonate in increasing acetoacetic acid formation in the liver-an effect which is largely d...

Fatty acid synthesis in adipose tissue. II. Enzymatic synthesis of branched chain and odd-numbered fatty acids.

Recent studies have done much to clarify the biosynthetic mechanism of normal long chain fatty acid synthesis (l-$)., However, very little is known about the biogenesis of odd-m bered and branched long chain fatty acids. Odd-numbered fat@ acids have been identified as minor components of ruminant milk (5), human milk (6), human blood (7), human sebum (8), rat phospolipids (9), and the lipids of...
